Looking for a ridingtour in Iceland? Take a look at this website and see if we can give you the riding holiday you dream of.

Over 200 years ago, our family settled down on this land of lava and has lived here for generations. In fact, the word "Hraunkot" means "a small house in the lava". Somehow, our forfathers found a way to culture the land and explore the resources while keeping the wild Icelandic nature.

Here on the farm Hraunkot, we can offer you horseback riding and homemade handcrafts, using our own materials.

Our aim is to let you experience Iceland in a natural way, just as generations before us have done.

You will find more information about horseback riding in the top menu.

We hope to see you during the summer!

Langhus Horse Farm

Langhús, 570 Fljót

OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND.

Our life is horse tours. It's been our passion, all our life. To go out in the nature and be a team with the horse. To see the beautiful places, and sometimes tough landscape, that molded our beloved Icelandic horse. To have the companionship of other horse lovers, and to just live and breath the fresh air in the nature, and feel the rhythm of life.

We offer guided horse tours with one of us, the local farmers at Langhus farm, or our assistant guides. We have well trained horses, steady and obedient, they are our family and work horses, and some of them have been used for competitions, they are happy, well taken care of, get regular days off, and a long vacation every year, and live a fulfilled life. We take the time to match you with the right horse for you, and to give good instructions about riding so you can enjoy the tour better. We keep this on a personal level, so people can see the Icelandic nature, the background of the horses and what made them what they are (the sometimes harsh and sometimes wonderful nature, the breeding, the people and the culture), get lessons if they want, get to know excellent horses and visit an Icelandic farm on the real countryside.

We have several tour options 1-4 hour long. But we can also do a special tour based on your wishes. We can do private tours for an extra fee. Just feel free to contact us and we make something wonderful together, and more important, have fun. Sometimes people also book more than one day tour. On our website you also find information about what accommodation is in the neighborhood, ideas about what to do when not riding etc.

Our groups are usually small and at the speed and difficulty that fits our guests. But if you have a bigger group, then we can now accommodate groups of 18 beginner riders, and 25 if some in your group are experienced. We also have programs for even bigger groups than that.

Also, it always takes a few minutes extra to prepare you for the tour, and it's not fun for you to be in a hurry. We do a little riding lesson before the tour itself starts, so if you are beginners you learn a bit about how to ride, and experienced riders learn how to ride the Icelandic horse. That is helpful and fun for everybody. So, the whole visit/experience here can easily take 30-90 minutes more than the tour itself. On the other hand, if you are very experienced and on a tight schedule we can do the whole process in a fast way and focus simply on the ride itself.

Animal welfare is also a priority for us, each horse never goes on more than 1 tour per day, and we give them at least 2 days off per week. They also get at least 2 months of vacation every year. They have big grassy pastures to roam on and top quality hay in the winter time. They live a very natural life in big herds.

Eco-consciousness is also a priority on our farm, to minimize trash, pollution and strain on nature.

Our add-on options, the geothermal mineral bath, and the waffle lunch, are also very popular.

Lynghorse

Lynghóll, 551 Sauðárkrókur

Even in my early youth in my home country Germany, I got to know and love the Icelandic horses. In 1996 I moved to Iceland and finished the FT young horse trainer diploma, awarded by the Icelandic Horse Trainers Association. Over the years I have gathered a lot of experience in horse tourism and worked on various farms as a guide and a horse trainer. Since 2004, I have been a part-time adjunct in the tourism department of the Hólar University college, in addition to my job as a horse trainer. In 2007 I completed an MBA degree in Tourism and Leisure Management. In 2010 I began my studies at Hólar University College’s department of Equine science from where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in riding and riding instructions in May 2013. (More information about this program is here.)
2013 - June 2014 I worked as a horse trainer at Mette Mannseth´s and Gisli Gislason´s farm Þúfur. Mette is the chef riding teacher in Hólar University College and the first woman to achieve the Master riding teacher and horse trainer degree of Iceland. This is the highest degree in icelandic horsemanship and just 5 other riders have ever achieved it.
Gisli and Mette are also among the best competition and breeding horse riders in Iceland.

Since september 2014 I am parttime teacher at the department of Equine studies of Hólar University College.

Finnsstaðir is a family-run business located about four minutes away from the town Egilsstaðir.

Finnsstaðir offers a few things, open all year round. Guesthouse to rent, horse rental, and the horse stable is always open between 10:00 – 17:00 for a short guided tour through the stable to see the horses, take pictures and meet the locals, but we recommend booking the tour with a bit of notice. From 15. may until 15. September, the petting zoo is open.

Finnsstaðir horse rental offers horses with great temperament and clean beated tölt. The tölt is a natural, fluid gait of the Icelandic horse. Its extraordinarily smooth four-beat gait, which allows the rider an almost bounce-free ride. In Finnsstaðir, you ride out in a small private group with a local guide. Most of the riding tours are about one hour, and the owner‘s goal is to keep everyone safe, give all the guests a good experience and memories to keep as long as you live. Longer trips with experienced riders could be available, but just contact Finnsstaðir and ask for availability.

On the farm is a big house to rent with three bedrooms and beds for six people. There are two bathrooms and a hot tub on the platform with a great view. The house is spacious and equipped with all standard modern comfort. Washing machine and dryer, the wifi in the house is very strong, and there is a kitchen to cook in.

Finnsstaðir petting zoo is open from 10:00-17:00 every day from 15. may until 15.September. All year round, there are chickens and ducks on the farm and, of course, horses, but during the summertime, it is possible to visit and get to know lambs, calves, pigs, ducklings, rabbits, and guinea pigs.

The animals at Finnsstaðir love people, especially children from all parts of the world.

Southcoast Adventure

Ormsvöllur 23, 860 Hvolsvöllur

Specializes in tailor-made private & luxury tours and all kinds of day trips around Iceland. Open schedule tours or private

Southcoast Adventure was established in 2009 by Þorgerður Guðmundsdóttir and Ársæll Hauksson. To begin with, there was just ONE jeep that was used to offer trips to tourists and mostly Icelanders who wanted to see more of their beautiful country. Two years later, their first member of staff was hired. The company today has 28 vehicles of all shapes and sizes, including snowmobiles and 4×4 buggies.

Initially, daily trips were offered to Eyjafjallajökul, Þórsmörk, and Fimmvörðuháls. Today, the company has grown considerably, and daily trips are offered in many vehicles to many destinations: snowmobile and buggy trips; twice daily departures to the ice cave; trips transporting luggage for those clients who are doing hikes to the various glaciers, mountains, and the interior; glacier ice-hikes as well as those up mountains and further inland.

All of this and custom-made trips/adventures for those who thirst for something off the beaten track. Many of the staff are also active members of the local Search and Rescue, and this obviously is a bonus when dealing with Icelandic nature and the sometimes rugged environment. Thankfully, their unique skills have not often been called upon, but it is a reassuring skill to have.

No two days are the same, and there is always a feeling of excitement for the next day at work and the adventures it may bring. The company prides itself on building incredible trips and memories for our clients, both locals and foreigners. Staff/guides are always encouraged to extend their knowledge as much as possible so that all clients are satisfied and the company aims always to improve their service. As mentioned, most of the staff/guides are from the surrounding areas – this is a huge advantage as it means that when needs arise, the local knowledge makes for a more comfortable working environment.

Southcoast Adventure offers luxury Super Jeep tours in South Iceland, such as day tours, guided hikes, or customized tours. Book your Iceland adventure now!

Buggy Tours:

Buggy tours in Iceland have become increasingly popular over the last decade. ATV adventure tours are suitable for almost anyone in terms of fitness level. They are, of course, guided by professionals. On the buggy tours, you’ll be able to reach unique destinations and get in touch with the beautiful nature along the south coast of Iceland.

Our perfect little mix of Little Bit of Everything Buggy Adventure tour.

Experience our two-hour buggy adventure tour. The tour starts from our base, Brú Base by Road 249. After a short briefing where your guide takes you through safety procedures, we dress up in a waterproof snow/whole suit and helmet and hop into our buggy ride.

Drive around the area between Fljótshlíð and Eyjafjallajökull. Visit waterfalls, drive on the Markaðsfljótaurar- tundra sand fields around Dímon, cross small streams, and stop at a viewpoint looking over Seljalandsfoss and Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands).

This two-hour buggy tour is a unique way to enjoy Icelandic nature and covers some waterfalls and gravel road driving. A stunning natural playground for the next few hours as you test out your buggy surrounded by amazing scenery only Iceland can offer.

These two-seater, 4×4 ATVs are fully automatic, thoroughly inspected, and road-legal. They also burst with excellent safety and design features, such as the roll cage, safety belts, and double A-arm front suspension. These factors make for a buggy ride that’s as safe as comfortable.

Half day (after 1pm): 7.500 ISK
Included: bike, helmet, repair kit and a map. Pickup in the coffee house.
If possible, kindly book a day in advance.

Riding Routes:
For experienced riders, the legendary Svalvogar route is a circle around a peninsula leading from Dýrafjorður into the next fjord, Arnarfjorður. One part is carved directly out of the steep rocks, other parts follow the shores so closely that you have to be aware of the changing tides. It’s a whole day activity that takes you through breathtaking scenery, impassable by regular cars and best experienced on a mountain bike. Keep in mind that the route can be extremely challenging; the full loop takes riders over rough terrain and over the Kaldbakur mountain pass.

The 49 km can be done in 8 hours (for experienced riders).

For those who are up for a bit of a challenge but don´t want to scale the mountain pass, biking out to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula and back is a great option. The round-trip ride typically takes about 4 hours.

Other more leisurely rides include cycling down to the waterfall at the bottom of the fjord and circling back along the other side. The route is approximately 25km of flat road and takes about 4 hours.

Feel free to ask in the coffeehouse for more information about cycling routes.

Opening hours this summer: 10:00-18:00 every day.

We are also an artist residency in the winter time.  For more info isit: www.westfjordsresidency.com
